ON TIANJIN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Tianjin Medical University founded in 1951 was the first medical institution approved by the State Council of the People¡¯s Republic of China. Dr. Hsien-I Chu, a renowned endocrinologist, was the first president of the university. At present, Mr. Yang Taiyao is the Party Secretary of the university. Dr. Hao Xishan takes the position of the President.

In December, 1993, with the approval of the State Education Council, the Tianjin Medical College and the Tianjin Second Medical College were integrated into the Tianjin Medical University. In December, 1996, the university was accepted into ¡° Project 211¡±, so it became one of the 97 key institutions in which there are 9 medical institutions that will be constructed emphatically by the State.

The total area occupied by the university is 400,000 square meters. The university now has 8419 staff, in which there are 5946 professionals. 1092 professionals hold senior position. It has 4672 students: 336 postgraduates, 3275 undergraduates, 991 junior-college students and 70 overseas students.

In1981, the university was approved by the Academic Degree Committee of State Council to confer the Doctorate Degree, Master¡¯s Degree and Bachelor¡¯s Degree and in 1988, was permitted to set up seven-year medical program. There are an Academician of Chines Engineering Academy and 41 supervisors of doctorate. It also has 1 Post-doctorate Movable Station, 11 Doctorate Locations and 34 Master¡¯s Degree Locations. Eight colleges and four Departments involve 10 specialties: Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Preventive Medicine, Stomatology, Nursing, Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering and Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.

The University has developed an integral system of medical education that includes clinical medicine, pharmacology, nursing, clinical lab sciences and medical administrations. The medical education involves seven-year program, five-year program, four-year program and three-year program. The University ranks in precedential part of the medical institutions in the nation wide. The University has seven university hospitals, three affiliated hospitals and over thirty teaching hospitals. Five thousand beds are available for the medical teaching, medical internship and medical practice.

The University has a number of State-level Key Disciplines and Local-level Key Disciplines. The Clinical Integration of Traditional Chinese medicine and Western Medicine (Surgery) is a State-level Key Discipline. The eight Local-level Key Disciplines are Endocrinology & Metabolic Disease, Oncology, Neurology, Medical Imaging, Urinary Surgery, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine and General Surgery. Three Local-level Key Development Disciplines are Microbiology & Immunology, Ophthalmology and Stomatology. The University has nine Research Institutions, one Key Laboratory of Ministry of Health and nine Clinical Pharmacology Center of Ministry of Health. Over the recent ten years, about three hundred medical researches passed the appraisals and eleven researches won the national awards.

The University Library has collection of 510 thousand volumes and 3 thousand kinds of journals, which was designated as Central Library by the Ministry of Health. The computer network including Internet has been opened for medical education, Long-distance Medical Education, E-mail, Document Transit and etc.

The University offers several kinds of scholarships: People Scholarship, Zhu Xianyi Scholarships, Chen Lude Nursing Scholarship, Wang Kechang Scholarship, Science and Engineering Scholarship, Tianjin Takeda Scholarship, Jianxuyunzhu Medical Scholarship.
