The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is one of the Departments of School of Basic Medical Sciences, at Tianjin Medical University (TMU). The Department has been ranked as one of the premier Departments since it was established at the School of Basic Medical Sciences in 2012. The Department has thirty-seven faculty members and staffs, nineteen of them are professors or associate professors, including one academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) (Professor Yongfeng Shang), one Chang Jiang Scholar chaired Professor (Professor Yongfeng Shang), two scholars of China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists (Professors Yongfeng Shang, and Jie Yang), one scholar of China National Funds for Excellent Young Scientist (Professor Yan Wang), three scientists supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in Chinese Universities (Ministry of Education, China) (Professors Jie Yang, Yan Wang and Lei Shi) and seven Ph.D. supervisors.
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology applies biochemistry and molecular biology tools to clinical demands with strong emphasis on medical epigenetic disorders. The core of the Departmental research touches on many vital bodily gene functions in development and diseases including cancers. Identification and characterization of malfunctioning genes in diseases can lead not only to better treatment of the diseases but also to understanding how the genes operate in the normal state. Each year, the Department takes on about thirty research projects mainly supported by Ministry of Science and Technology (‘973 Project and “863 Project”), Ministry of Education (the Ministry of Education Innovation Team), Natural Science Foundation of China, China’s National Twelfth Five-Year Plan, “211 Project” and Tianjin Municipal Government. Topics of investigation include regulation of gene transcription epigenetically and signal transduction in normal and abnormal status.
The Department is also dedicated to providing a rich intellectual environment for training undergraduate students, graduate students and international students as postdoctoral fellows. There are seven courses organized by the Department for five-year, seven-year program of clinical medical students and graduate students including Biochemistry, Principles of Molecular Biology, Molecular Biology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Molecular Biology, Experiment of Biochemistry, and Experiment of Molecular Biology.
The major goals of the Department are to create an environment that challenges and motivates researchers in fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and provide cutting-edge research laboratories for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, and translate basic medical findings into techniques for preventing and treating diseases from bench to bedside.
